Prepare Your Home For Vacation

prepare for vacationSummer is in the air and the desire to forget about reality for a while might be on your mind.  The need to get away to that place where there is a soft summer breeze, as you lay on a white sandy beach, in a comfortable hammock with a cool refreshing glass of iced tea and some soft music playing in the background. You can feel the warmth of the sun surrounding you as the gentle sound of the ocean lets you drift off to a wonderful state of complete relaxation.

You don’t have a care in the world at a time like this all you can think about is how good it feels to finally get away from the busy life you deal with every day.  At this moment, when you have completely escaped from reality, the last thing you want to think of is…

Did I shut the main water valve off before I left?  Did I check the water heater for leaks?  Did I test my sump pump to make sure it is working properly? Thoughts that would bring you out of that perfect moment on the beach and back to the reality you so desperately tried to escape.

Sharing this scenario with you is our way of helping you remember that when you are planning your vacation for a week or two to relax and rejuvenate, there are household plumbing checks that should be done to avoid a possible disaster that could occur while you are gone.  Here are a few plumbing related items, we recommend, should be checked before leaving on vacation.

  1. Main Water Valve  – Turn off the main water valve.  This will help ensure that a flood doesn’t occur in the home should you have a pipe that starts to leak or burst while you are gone.
  2. Sump Pump – Make sure it’s working so your home doesn’t flood while you are away. Pouring a bucket of water in the hole where your sump pump is located will help you check to make sure it is working properly.
  3. Water Heater – Inspect your water heater for leaks or cracks in the pipes.  Also, it might be a good idea to set the thermostat to a “vacation” setting so it won’t use energy to heat water while you are gone.
  4. Drains – Drains that are not used can create unpleasant odors while you are gone.  This can be prevented by adding a little water and our “Bio-Clean” product to each drain in your home.
